Hey guys, just wondering if I could get some clarification for movement rules in Deadlands Classic.
I am not sure if players must spend an action card to move, or if movement is just PART of an action.
I get there are negatives to firing a weapon if walking/running, and that running is if u move more than your pace (being able to move a max of double pace per round).
We are just a bit confused and I can't seem to find a definitive answer.
I am using the 20th anniversary rule book if that helps.
Cheers in advance.

The Faceless GM

You walk into a poorly lit saloon. The only light filters in through a cloudy window, so caked with dust that the sun barely bothers. The room is next to deserted, save a single man sitting alone at a table. ”Pull up a chair,” he says, grinning. ”Give old Jasper some company.” He takes a long swing from his tin tankard, eying each and every one of you. ”Not from around here, are ya’? Not from too far though. Well, I suppose that Belknap attracts all sorts of people. And y ou’ve got that tenderfoot look about you. Ah, don’t worry ‘bout it. Everyone was green once. Even me.” He laughs, but the sound comes out more of a rattling cackle. ”Still, I suppose it can’t hurt to impart some wisdom in you young pups. Might help you survive out in the wastelands.”

He sets his mug down and stares at you. ”So tell me. You know how this whole mess got started? I bet you’ve heard some stories. Well, let me tell you how it really went down. Ya’ see, there was this injun shaman by the name of Raven and he was mighty pissed at the white folks, seeing as they killed his entire tribe. It’s a long story, but the short version is that he riled up a whole posse o’ others like him who wanted their revenge on the white man and he set a plan in motion. He and his cronies, he called ‘em something fancy like, but I always thought he was bein’ grandiose. Anyway, he and his cronies managed to open up a way into the Hunting Ground, the world of the spirits. Don’t look at me like that. It’s as real as me or you, ya’ whelp. Where do you think all the abominations and mystical horse sh*t out there come from?”

He takes another drink and as he shifts you realize that his left arm was blown off by something not far above the wrist. ”Right, so Raven and his cronies cast down the good spirits that were keepin’ all the magic mumbo jumbo trapped in the Hunting Ground and released the magic back into the world. And with magic came evil. Four beings known as the Reckoners rose to his call and returned to our world with a vengeance. Their servants, demon spirits called manitous, swarmed into our world, just lookin’ for human evil to feed on and grow stronger. And more o’ course. Ya’ see, they could possess a man as he died and bring him back to life, hitchin’ a ride in the process. And a whole hell of a lot of ‘em did. It was July 3rd, 1863 when things went sour. I bet you recognize that date. Or maybe not. I don’t know how much learnin’ kids get these days. That was the day of the Battle of Gettysburg and the day that everything changed. With the dead risin’ and slaughtering both sides, the war shifted from a Union victory to a bloody stalemate. Course, it was just the first war. The first of many.”

He spits to the side. ”Ba, I’m sure you’re thinkin’ of walkin’ out by now. Well, let me tell ya’, if humans had paid a little more attention to their history, you wouldn’t be in this mess. But instead ya’ kept making more ways to kill each other instead. The Reckoners knew that humans just couldn’t help themselves, so they planted the seeds of our end: ghost rock. Funny thing, ghost rock. It screams like the damned if you burn it. You’d think that would be a sign there’s something wrong. But humans were far too interested in how this funny new super fuel could be used to kill people better. First it power tanks. Then it powered planes. Finally, it powered bombs. And that was all you needed to end the world as you knew it.”

He tilts back his tankard, draining the tin cup dry before slamming it down on the table. ”The G-bombs fell on September 23rd, 2081. That’s a day no one who lived through it will ever forget. Every major city, every government, every military, was gone in a white flash and replaced with the howling storms of forsaken souls. Terrible. And beautiful in a way. But that was thirteen years ago. Imagine, the world’s been the blasted wasteland you’ve been trekkin’ through for nearly a decade and a half and folks are already startin’ to rebuild. Amazing thing really. Still, with the road gangers, monsters, horrors, and who knows what else out there, I doubt the world will ever really put itself together again. Unless of course, there are some heroes out there to help put things right again.” He grins wickedly, his mouth looking just a little bit too wide, making him look more like a grinning skeleton than a man. ”Who knows tenderfoot? Maybe you’re those heroes. You’ve got the right feel for it.” With that, he stands up and walks toward the door. He pauses just a moment to look back. ”I ain’t seen a real hero in a long time. But you might just do it. We’ll see. And I’ll be watchin’. Old Jasper’s always interested in a new hero in town.” He cackles again and as the sunlight catches his face, his skin goes almost see through, making him look like a desiccated corpse for a moment before he vanishes like a spectre.

Intro

Whew. So, anyone who stuck with me through that rather long expository opening, welcome to my recruitment for Deadlands: Hell on Earth. It’s a mix of classic westerns, science fiction, horror, and post-apocalyptic goodness that creates a rather strange, but thoroughly enjoyable setting. I’ll be running this game using the Reloaded ruleset, which is part of the Savage Worlds system. A passing familiarity with the system will be pretty much all you need to get used to the setting. I’ve got two friends who are already getting ready to play, so I’m looking for 3-4 more players who are interested in becoming heroes of the Wasted West. We’ve got a templar (think a paladin but not necessarily as nice) and a psychic soldier (exactly what it sounds like) already, but we’ve got plenty of room to be just about anything you want. As for story… well I don’t want to give too much away, but I’m going to be diving into the Classic metaplot and doing a mix of homebrew and conversions of Classic Hell on Earth modules to make a fairly long campaign.

Character Creation

Creating characters will use the standard character creation rules for Hell on Earth Reloaded, which is basically Savage Worlds character creation with one or two little tweaks.
Point Buy: Standard (5 attribute and 15 skills)
Edges: Anything from Savage Worlds or Hell on Earth is fair game unless it’s specifically noted to not exist. A few edged require Marshal approval, but I’ll usually approve most concepts.
Hindrances: Standard (1 major, 2 minor) Note that you aren’t required to pick up any, but it’s usually a good idea
Wealth: $500 dollars to start (as opposed to the $250 noted in the books)

Character Backgrounds

I care much more about your character’s well, character than I do about the mechanics. An interesting backstory is vastly preferable to something short and thrown together. So there are a few questions that you should consider. Note that just answering these questions is not necessarily enough to get in. Be creative and expand your backstory as you see fit. The lore for Deadlands can be kind of heavy sometimes, and not everyone has access to all the books. If anyone has any questions, please please ask them. I'm more than happy to make lore posts to explain setting details to help people come up with a good character concept and to help expand on anything that isn't clear.

Where is your character from? Putting aside Jasper’s comment, you could in fact be from quite far away. The Wasted West has all sorts of interesting locales and strange folks running around. Where you can from can say a lot about your character.
What does your character look like? Yeah, yeah. Obviousness aside, you might look downright strange. Mutations have started to crop up and plenty of people have scars, tattoos and who knows what that all have a story behind them. See what you’ve got that marks you out.
How old is your character? This may seem oddly specific, but it’s more important than you’d think. The bombs only fell thirteen years ago after all. Were you too young then to even remember them, or are you old enough to have had a life before everything went to hell?
How does your character act? Give me a nice idea of how your character acts. What is their personality like? What are their likes and dislikes? What are they afraid of?
What does your character want in life? While the world is pretty well destroyed, it’s hardly the end of humanity and folks have dreams and goals just like they did before the end. What are your character’s?

Recruitment will be open until at least April 2nd, depending on how much interest I get.

I played some Deadlands Way Back in the day. I have the new Savage Worlds rulebook, but do you have the Player's Guide pdf available to share from Hell on Earth? The Pinnacle website says a GM can obtain pdf copies for his players under his full book purchase. Just curious.

The Faceless GM

I do in fact have the Player's Guide. I believe that I'm not supposed to share pdfs in threads, so anyone who wants to see it can PM me and I'll send a link.

Bane88

This sounds awesome but I am unfamiliar with the system, is there a SRD or something, or is a purchase required to play?

The Faceless GM

Unfortunately there is not an SRD that I'm aware of. There's a sort of unofficial wiki that's... workable.

Bane88

If I bought the Hero lab supplements, would that provide me with enough mechanical data to figure it out do you think?

The Faceless GM
Loup Blanc

Hey all! One of the friends mentioned above here (the Templar one), just posting in to track developments and say my piece. In terms of Hero Lab, I would guess that it would give you some of the basic knowledge, but Savage Worlds is a system that's fairly easy to even just jump into headfirst with a character you help make. I've been in a game where we had at least one player who didn't originally have access to the rules, and he gave the GM what he wanted to play and the GM made his character (with more input of course). It worked out pretty well in the end, I think, so even if you aren't familiar with the system or don't have access, I expect you could still play. I know Faceless enjoys building characters and I'd help out as well, so I'm sure it's no problem if you don't want to pay for a book.

The Faceless GM

What Loup said. I have the vast majority of the books anyway, so I can provide info for any character concept that you can think of.

Bane88

Ok, well let's see. I can't find a list of classes anywhere, do you guys have a link or a link to buy the book in PDF format?

EDIT: I bought and downloaded the Core and Deadland Reloaded PDF. I think the character that I want to make taking shape is a Japanese immigrant with Martial artist. Maybe Chi master arcane background.

I thought it would be cool if he was exiled from his family, a samurai clan in the still feudal Japan. He allowed his father to be killed by enemy ninja while on a trip to Kyoto with him. Unable to face his shame, my PC refused to take his own life and fled to america. He thinks that it is only a matter of time before his clan's own ninja or even his brothers themselves come to erase the stain from the family's honor.

Do you guys have stat suggestions or suggestions for edges and hindrances? I saw something called My kung fu is superior.

The Faceless GM

Deadlands Reloaded is the Weird West setting. Deadlands Hell on Earth is an entirely different book. It's a few centuries later, after the world has been destroyed by ghost rock nukes. All of the Arcane Backgrounds from the Weird West don't exist anymore, so Enlightened Martial Artists don't exist anymore. A kung fu master could still be a thing (though he would be using the Hell on Earth kung fu rules), but he's probably not an immigrant because well, there haven't been immigrants in more than a decade. International travel is kind of hard when there's not really civilization anymore.

If you wanted to go with that concept, having him descended from a samurai clan or noble family who immigrated to Japan back in the 1800s and trying to maintain his family's teachings in the wake of the world ending would fit the setting much better.

Bane88

AAHH ten whole dollars! Just kidding, after reading through the books, this is a very cool gaming format that will more than likely use for years to come.

So I could get the Hell on Earth's player guide and be good you think?

The Faceless GM

If you have the Savage World's core book, then definitely. Send me a PM and I can send it to you.

Bane88

Ok. I will likely need some help with the mechanics but thematically, I would like to be a martial artist gunslinger. I was thinking maybe a lawbringer.

Having combat focused Psyker stuff would be cool, but I'm unsure of how to format it.

Basically I want to use Gun-Katas to fight and avoid bullets.

that first video actually starts the fighting at 3 mins, skip ahead.

The Faceless GM

I'm fairly certain that's doable. I'll have to check exactly what does what to find the mechanics that make it work. The easiest way would be to take the Syker background and get the deflection power, then flavor it as dodging bullets since you can flavor powers however you want in Savage Worlds.

Bane88

Yes! Is our other player a psyker/soldier? are they apostate or Unity peeps or earth psyker?

The Faceless GM

I believe he's an Earth Syker. He's a bit of a greenie from what we've talked about so far.

JDPhipps

I'm an Earth Syker; I'm a Combine defector who used his psionics to damage the chip in his head, and then I jumped ship and they haven't seen me since.

The Faceless GM

Well, I'm basically getting no interest in this, I'm going to close out recruitment. Maybe I'll try again some other time and see if I can get more interest at a later date.

Deadlands Hell On Earth Core Pdf To Excel

I am still interested in this, I just have had a busy week! How many edges do we get to start? I know humans get a free one.

Also do we start at novice rank or is that optional/defined somewhere?

Nebten

Please let me know if you decide to get this rolling again, Faceless. I've been interested in playing Deadlands: Hell on Earth (Reloaded) for some time. The cover art on the core rule book is beautiful. Holding and viewing it in person is remarkable, the internet doesn't do the book justice.

I have played in a SW Salomon Kane game up to 200 XP.

Bane88

I assume we don't just 'get' clothes, the cost comes out of starting cash.

also here is a link to my current sheet.

The Faceless GM

Alright, I have an update. Some things have gone down in real life that are... rough for me and my two friends so both I and them haven't had time to work on campaigns really. If there's still interest, I can just let this sit for a while and let people post in with concepts and builds for a bit.

You actually do get one set of clothes free though. The wealth rules give you a set of clothes on your back.

Loup Blanc

I've got my character finished, mechanically at least. The name may be a bit much but I got inspired and wanted it to be as over-the-top cheesy action hero-y as I could come up with, while also fitting the post-apocalypse.

And yes, it is a real last name. People have it.

GM Niles

I'd be interested in this...but I don't know much about Deadlands OR Hell on Earth. Give me some time to do some reading/pick up the PDFs.

(I'm running a SW game on the forums here that Loup is in)

The Faceless GM
Do we start at seasoned?

Not by default. Loup and JD both took an edge called 'Veteran of the Wasted West'. It starts you at seasoned, but also gives you an extra randomly rolled for Hindrance that you don't get any benefits from. Loup has a severe alcohol addiction and JD has a major enemy that will stop at nothing to kill him.

GM Niles wrote:

Take your time.

Bane88

To make sure the timeline is right, how long since the Psykers came back from the other planet?

The Faceless GM

Thirteen years. They arrived barely a few days after the world ended.

Peanuts

Hmm hmm, interesting. never played a hell on earth game, but I did buy up a bunch of deadlands stuff a few years ago. Let me dig it out and see what sort of character I can come up with :)

GM Niles

I picked up the Hell on Earth players guide. It was like 5 bucks on PEG's website.

Question: Should we begin knowing each other? If so, does anyone mind if I make up a story for a Junker (Arcane Background) and tie it to another character. This would work for one of the guys who took the Veteran edge since they've been traveling awhile.

The concept is a slightly nutty inventor type who tinkers and fidgets with things and who is maddeningly obsessed with technology. Only, he frequently misuses it and almost never understands its original purpose. Eg: Using a telephone handset and cord as a belt. I also plan on him being young, like maybe 16 or 17, so all he knows is the Savage Wasteland of Hell on Earth.

GM Niles

Ok...so upon further review. Arcane Background Junker isn't for me...its WAY too complicated.

I'm thinking a budding Law Dog instead, someone to balance out Zeke's zeal with the cold rationality of Justice.

Similar premise though, young and impressionable. Doesn't know much about the old world.

The Faceless GM

You can know each other or be strangers. Either one works out fine, as I have an opening event to get people working together.

Law Dogs are definitely fun, so feel free to go with whatever.

And one thing for everyone that I forgot. I also have the Hell on Earth companion and can share it. It has more character options including the Cyborg rules, two Arcane Backgrounds (Witch and Bibliopath), and a bunch of equipment and the like. PM me if any of that sounds interesting.

Loup Blanc

GM Niles: If you want our characters to know each other I'd be totally down for that. Zeke's probably run into his share of Law Dogs during his travels, both before and after becoming a Templar; I'm even considering having him be accompanied by one during the background segment where he finally kills the raider who murdered his town. Balancing out the grizzled and angry old preacher with a young kid who wants to make a difference, sounds like a buddy cop movie.

Except, you know. With more mutants.

GM Niles

Well, I've gotten to take a look at the Companion and I really like the Bookworm. The character would remain the same, I'm just tinkering with the traits/skills/edges.

Is there anything that prohibits someone from say being a Librarian/Bookworm AND a Lawdog?

Peanuts

Hmm, currently considering a Doomsayer... Cyborg would be cool but I think I want to play a mutie :p Witch sounds fun too though. Will continue to ponder away, but probably the doomsayer at this point, a fairly young doomsayer too (early twenties)...

The Faceless GM

No reason why you can't. You would need a good reason as to how and why you're maintaining both jobs. Or you could be a former Librarian who joined up with the Law Dogs later. There are multiple ways you could play it.

Peanuts wrote:

Sounds good. Take your time. I'm willing to let this go slow so people have the chance to explore the material.

GM Niles

Well, it honestly seems like those two jobs are similar enough that their goals overlap a good bit.

Librarians Preserve and Record knowledge
Law Dogs restore law

To me it seems like both of them are about restoring civilization (or some semblance of it) the Law Dog is focused on justice and civil society, the Librarian is focused on knowledge and staving off the ignorance that might come after an apocalypse.

The current story in my head is of a young man who found a Book on Legal Theory (or Philosophy) and read it ravenously. He was also impressed with some interaction with a Law Dog (or someone like that) enough to want to emulate them. His love of books (knowledge) led him to discover the Book Spirits that inhabit certain books. To this young man, restoring law and order means restoring centuries of legal precedent and the knowledge of systems of law.

I'd like to play the character becoming a Law Dog and/or Librarian in the game and not begin as either one. Mechanically it can be done after 5/6 advances

@Loup I'm totally ok with being Zeke's sidekick. Perhaps my character tagged along as Zeke was meteing out 'justice' in order to get a firsthand account of how the law works in the Wasted West versus how it works in the books he reads. He can then advise Zeke on the proper procedures in regards to legal proceedings. I can envison the following exchange

My character says Zeke, this man should be served a warrant before we kick his door in. It's very plainly spelled out in... Zeke interjects Damnit son! We don't have time for no damned silly warrant! This man killed people! Now, draw your damned iron and get ready!

Just some thoughts.

That sounds fine to me as well. If you're starting the game as not being quite a Law Dog or Librarian, do you still want to have known each other before the campaign starts? I could definitely see it still working; maybe Zeke helped your character or his town at one point, or they interacted personally in some way? I dunno.

GM Niles

I planned on starting with 0XP, which doesn't really allow for being both...especially if I wanted to begin with the Arcane Background (Bookworm).

Yeah, my thought is that Zeke passed through wherever my character is from (haven't put much thought into it, is there a place that fits well?) and my character attached himself onto Zeke for the reasons stated in my last post. Their relationship can be a fairly new one. In fact that is probably for the best. Perhaps my character has only known Zeke for a few weeks and Zeke keeps him around because he was tired of riding alone.

The Faceless GM

Becoming one or the other (or both, because that sounds fine as a background) as the campaign progresses is fine with me. And yeah, the Law Dogs and Librarians work together quite a bit. The Librarians have scribes on permanent station in Junkyard and Boise too for that matter.

GM Niles

I picture my character being from a smallish hamlet, not a large place at all. Is there some place specifically in Zeke's background?

Btw, thanks for responding to all my queries and comments. I find that making a character completely in isolation from the other players can lead to problems. IE: Conflicting motivations, severe character personality conflicts, mechanical problems (who has repair?! no one?!) so I always encourage my own groups to make backstories and mechanics with everyone else in mind.

Anyways, here is one version of the mechanics I'm looking at and I'll be making a backstory to fit in with whatever character I decide upon (this one is the leading contender).

So far my guy is a complete badass with d12 fighting and d10 shooting. Otherwise he is angry, vengeful and arrogant! Sounds super pleasant to be around.

PS I don't have repair.

GM Niles

So...how is he supposed to work with a Templar and characters who are very interested in 'the greater good'?

Loup Blanc

All we have to do is turn him to working for the greater good, much as Zeke was in his backstory. Anger and vengeance can be curbed toward a burning desire for justice, given time, effort, and the right circumstances.

That said, I would voice my suggestion as a player to spread your skills out a little more than that. A d8 at start is pretty good, and a d10 is really as great as you need; a d12 is fairly unnecessary, eats up a lot of points, and leaves you with no way to advance that skill for a long time.

Zeke passing through a town and meeting your character sounds good to me, Niles. I agree that having characters work well off one another both mechanically and RP-wise helps a fair bit, since strongly conflicting motivations and personalities can make it very difficult for a party to logically stay together. (It can also add to fun roleplaying and character development, of course, but that requires a whole lot of other variables lining up right.) I can't think of anywhere specific off the top of my head; Zeke's from a small settlement himself but he's the only survivor (as far as he knows, at least), and I would offer the suggestion of placing his confrontation with the raider boss as an option, but that happened back before Zeke became a Templar, so that doesn't work much either. I'd say pick whatever you like and I'll work it in my backstory too.

GM Niles

I tend to agree with Loup....a wide set of skills is much better than a narrow set of skills that is only useful in combat.

Bane88
I tend to agree with Loup....a wide set of skills is much better than a narrow set of skills that is only useful in combat.

Fair enough, I'll rework some, and say only have 1 or 2 skills at d10 so I can advance them in the future.

As far as working together, I'm totally able to make friends, and my major hinderance arrogance, really only comes into play not with thoughts towards right and wrong, but more so my character is an elitist who is interested in personal challenge. (read, only fights the boss, ignores the mobs unless they directly get in my way)

And as an apostate who has spent the first half of my life on another planet, my only real 'beef' is with Unity Psykers.

I reworked my skills, spreading them out into tracking, piloting, lockpicking, repair, and heal.

Peanuts

Still here and will be dedicating some time to working on the character in the next few days. My Doomsayer char was about 8 years old when the nukes dropped and was in the process of getting out of Seattle(on the outskirts) where his parents worked when it got hit. He took a heavy dose of radiation but survived with his new mutation (GM needs to draw one for me on the table), while his guardian at the time was not so fortunate. She passed away a few months later leaving him to sscrounge and fend for himself for a few years until he got picked up by some other mutant survivors. They were heading south after hearing rumors of a mutant safe haven, which proved to be a small town in Oregon set up by one of Joan the heretic's disciples. It was there the pre-teen began to learn about the Glow which had claimed his family, but which he came to realize had spared him.

So yeah, character will be fairly bright and resilient, but not too fast or strong. Will have more for you guys later :0

EmissaryOfTheNorth

Here layeth Emissary, hoping it isn't too late to apply!

I will go and read Hell on Earth pdfs to have at least a mild idea of what I'm getting myself into, but I got a general concept already:

Middle aged man with a backstory in the military before the G-Bombs fell, just not your typical infantry man: a member of the Engineer Corps from Spain.
He was in the U.S. of glorious A. For a joint training when the bombs fell and got caught inside the ensuing chaos. Since then he has been doing a fair share of tinkering jobs and had a reasonably simple -if hellish- life in a small settlement. Then came the draught -even drier this time- and with it came the madness, the crimes and the raiders.
In the end his settlement fell and the survivors had to reallocate to a new region: Belknap, where he resides now.
The war, the monsters, the mad-max raiders and generally miserable life have make him a slightly cynical guy, but that's just a psychological defense he erected as to suffer less, because in truth he still believes in humanity or what's left from them.

As I said, gotta read the pdfs because one of the options I'm considerating is 'technomancy' be it magic, psyking or plain old weird science.

GM Niles

The name I chose is that of a recycled Alias, if you think it won't fit the setting I have no problem making a new Alias.

The Bookworm:
Where is your character from? Small Midwestern Hamlet by the name of No Consequence, Kansas.

Earth Outer Core

What does your character look like? This fair skinned man is 6' 1', has short, black hair, grey eyes and is very thin.
How old is your character? 22, Nilus was 9 when the bombs fell. He remembers the old world only vaguely and never really thinks about it too much except when he is feeling morose.

Pictures Of The Earth Core

How does your character act? Nilus is a quiet and bookish young man who’d rather be reading a book than doing most anything else. He fancies himself a deep thinker and a bit of a philosopher, enough that he often (mis)quotes philosophy texts, as if he read just enough to know a little but not enough to know enough. Like most of his generation (what is left of it anyways) he learned to ride, how to live without creature comforts and the basics of self-defense from mutated and undead monstrosities.
What does your character want in life? Nilus would like to make the world a safer place. I know, its cliché, but he really is a mostly selfless young man who hasn’t seen enough of the Wasted West to be cynical. He would like to join up with the Librarians out in Sacremento. He’s heard a little of them in his short time on the road and they sound just like his kind of people. Nilus also has an iron clad conscience and a keen sense of justice, he knows that as long as there is Law then there can be civilization. As long as there is Law then there can be some freedom from fear. To this end Nilus believes strongly in the work of the Law Dogs, whether or not he joins their ranks remains to be seen, but Nilus certainly has strong sympathies for the Law Dogs and will work to assist them whenever he can.

Background:
Nilus Romerus was born April 10 2075, just a few years before Judgement Day. His mother and father were typical country folk, his dad was a criminal defense attorney and Mom stayed at home, at least that is what Nilus remembers of his time before the G-Bombs fell.
Judgement Day changed everything, for everyone. Nilus’ mom was part of the initial deathtoll as she was in Lawrence, KS for a Spa Day. Well, mom never made it back. Dad and little N stuck around in No Consequence for the next few years but things got worse and worse. Eventually, dad died from a plague. Folks said it was the Red Death carried by Pestilence herself, but it didn’t matter to Nilus. Nilus dad’s small library and his rebuilt shack passed to a teenage boy. This trauma is what awakened Nilus to the Book Spirits, they allowed him to escape his troubles inside of a good book. The Book Spirits were his best friend. He named one “Daredevil” because this spirit claimed it could not see Nilus, but could instead “hear” his thoughts. His other friend he named “Flashman” because he appeared to Nilus like a flash of light. These two spirits kept Nilus company while he lived alone in No Consequence for several more years, becoming a bit of an odd ball in the small hamlet of between 75 and 90 people, depending on how bad the harvest was. Nilus would read his books in the town square for the kids, especially his Hardee Boyz novels that the older folks said “filled the youngins heads with silliness” One fateful day a group of rough riders passed through No Consequence on their way somewhere, of course they looted and pillaged the town, but the inhabitants of No Consequence, Kansas were used to such depredations. On the heels of the group came a man with a Tabard…Nilus saw his opportunity! All these years reading stories about The People vs. G. Osterman, Knights of the Round Table and Hardee Boyz:Live Life to the Fullest left Nilus with a hankering for some adventure. So, Nilus volunteered himself to help Zeke, or Big Z as he calls him, and they’ve been on the road now for a few months. Nilus has learned a lot in those months, turns out there’s a group of like minded people who value books and what they represent just as much as Nilus does. Nilus also was introduced to the idea of the Law Dog, the person who spends their time tracking, catching and punishing those who break the Law in the Wasted West. This appeals to Nilus who grew up hearing his father discuss the legal system and the Law as this edifice that protected civilization from the monsters. Nilus now rides with Zeke, hoping that one day he can contribute his own part to making the Wasted West a better place.

This is obviously a work in progress and I look forward to hearing your feedback.
