Song to the Sun, known in Japan as Taiyō no Uta (タイヨウのうたSong of the Sun), is a movie directed by Norihiro Koizumi starring the Japanese artist and singer Yui. In the movie, she plays the role of Kaoru Amane (雨音 薫 Amane Kaoru), a 16-year-old girl who has the rare skin condition xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a disease that makes the ultraviolet radiation of sunlight potentially lethal to her. Yui's character is partly based on herself, as she is a singer and guitarist, and she performs three of Yui's songs in the movie; 'It's Happy Line', 'Good-bye Days' and 'Skyline'. There has been a 2006 Japanese TV drama starring Takayuki Yamada and Erika Sawajiri, a manga by Bandō Kenji and Minatsuki Tsunami, a 2015 Vietnamese / Japanese drama, and a 2018 American remake, all based on the film.[2]
Plot[edit]
Kaoru has Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a medical condition that forbids its bearer from being exposed from direct sunlight. She sleeps during the day, and is active at night. She busks every night in front of a station, playing the guitar. Outside her bedroom window, she spots a high school boy with a surfboard. She watches him and his friends visit the ocean every morning before going to sleep. One day, she introduces herself to him without letting him know about her medical condition. He is Kōji Fujishiro. When her friend drags her home, they sit by her window, while they watch Kōji meet his friends. Kaoru explains everything, and her friend notes that she probably goes to the same school as him, and offers to spy on him for her.
The next evening, she sits by the bus stop. Kōji arrives on his scooter. Both embarrassed, they start talking, with Kōji eventually promising to meet her, and listen to her sing another night, at the start of the school holidays. When they meet up, another obnoxious street performer has taken her spot. Kōji decides to take her to the city, where after seeing the sights, she starts playing in a square. (YUI's music video Skyline features this event). A substantial crowd gathers to hear her sing. Afterwards, they watch the ocean, and Kōji asks her out.
Their date ends abruptly as the sun breaks out and Kaoru flees home. Kōji is soon informed of Kaoru's condition, and is taken aback. For a while, Kaoru stubbornly refuses to see him. Kōji learns of a recording studio, where Kaoru could record her debut single, and takes up small jobs to earn the money to pay for it. Her father, out of concern, invites Kōji over one night. At dinner, Kōji reveals his plans for Kaoru's CD. As they walk home that night, the two begin to talk, and Kaoru slowly realizes how much Kōji truly cares for her.
As her medical condition begins to grow much worse over time, she loses feeling in her hands and is unable to play guitar. She assures Kōji that she still has her voice.
In the studio, she asks her family and friends to leave. She asks them to wait for the CD.
Some time later, and as promised, Kōji brings Kaoru to the beach to watch him surf. The protective suit she had left hanging for years is finally used. By now, she is in a wheelchair. She complains that the suit is getting hot. With a painful expression that fades quickly, Kaoru's father tries to convince her that if she takes off the suit, it cannot bother her anymore, that she could run around freely. She declines. With that, she struggles to stand up, and limps weakly toward Kōji. As she walks, she trips over the sand, and Kōji rushes to tend to her. She catches herself at the last minute, revealing that it was a feint, and giggles at his surprised face.
Later, Kaoru succumbs to her medical condition and eventually dies. She is laid to rest in a coffin full of sunflowers. Kōji and Kaoru's friends and family listen as Kaoru's CD is finally released. In the final scene Kōji rushes towards the waves with his mind replaying her voice.

DVD release[edit]
There are two Japanese DVD releases of Taiyō no uta, a standard and a premium edition. The premium edition includes a bonus disc with nearly 90 minutes of making-of footage, deleted scenes, the music video for the song 'Good-bye Days', and interviews with Yui, Takashi Tsukamoto and the film's director. It also has special features of Yui's Diary and a pick pendant with a necklace. Only making of Taiyō no Uta was released on June 2, 2006. Both standard edition and premium edition were released on June 11, 2006. Midnight Sun has also been released on DVD in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. The film's original soundtrack is available on CD.
Remake[edit]
In May, 2015 the writer Eric Kirsten confirmed an American version of the film, centers on New York City.[3] The main couple will be starring by Bella Thorne as Katie (originally Kaoru) and Patrick Schwarzenegger as Charlie (originally Koji).[4] The film was released March 23, 2018. Charlie skateboards by Katie’s house instead of surfboarding and Katie’s friend tells Charlie about Katie’s disease. The remake has many differences when it comes to smaller things.

“The sun is about to rise…”
Taiyou no Uta, also known as, A Song to the Sun, is about sixteen year old Kaoru, who because of a disease can never be out in the sun. Living all her life in darkness and watching the sun light from afar, she longs for the warmth only the sun can give. The only thing that gives her some sort of happiness is the few hours at night she gets her guitar and goes to sing in the street. One day through her window she sees a boy who emit’s a brightness and warmth that she can’t help but be drawn to. All she wants is just to meet him, knowing that’s he can’t. All she needs is a chance meeting.. Just one.
For it being a oneshot it moves at a reasonable pace, except for the whole falling in love thing so fast, that always stumps me.
Kaoru just wants to be like everyone else. Because of her disease, her environment is limited to being indoors away from sunlight. She yearns for the part of life we take for granted, the beauty of daylight.
Koji, who you can't help but like for his sweet smile and good natures is a nice addition to this manga. We get to know him a little bit and we see in such a short time the potential he has for growth as a character.
There are very few characters in this one, centering around mainly her close family. We have actual parents in this one. Parents who are usually a figment of imagination in manga, are present and not in the annoying way they are usually represented in other works or to make the main people’s live miserable. They are caring and nice and actually say more than two sentences.
Art, was pretty but average. There wasn’t anything memorable about the art in itself but the illustrations makes you feel nostalgic at times and that suits the pace and tone of the manga. Which made sense in the way that the art went along with the personality of Kaoru all the way through.
The story of Kaoru and Koji is a very short one. I felt it was too short, Kenjo could have milked this cow for at least one more volume. Maybe it’s me just wanting to read a little bit more of this romance, that ended too soon. Or maybe I was hoping that they took their time in developing more their relationship instead of jumping ships and all.
It has a warm ending, not one of my favorites, but at least it leaves you with closure of sorts.

'He's someone who lives under the sun...'
There's something different about sixteen-year-old Kaoru. her father calls it individuality. Kaoru thinks of it as a curse. she has a disease. but not just any disease. a disease that cannot allow her to be under the sun...or she'll die. Because of this, she spends her nights singing outside with her guitar, and her days in her room, watching a boy at the bus stop. before long, she finds herself falling in love, and yearning to talk to him at least once. but she knows this will never happen.
but what happens when she coincidentally runs into him while on her nightly street performance?
this tragic story shows that no matter how big the obstacle, or no matter how you are, true love awaits for everyone.
the character's in this story are very heart warming. Fujishiro Kouji is the boy whom Kaoru has been watching. he is an aloof surfer who likes having fun. he can't surf great, and he isn't the smartest guy around, yet he manages to bring smiles and hope to Kaoru, who only knew how to live in darkness. who would've thought that you could meet someone for the first time, and in one night know she was the one? his loyalty to her throughout the story is captivating, and his strong love for her brings tears to your eyes. you see how much he sacrifices to bring her happiness, because you can tell that her happiness is his happiness. he truly is a wonderful character and one to learn from.
Kaoru, despite her situation, tries to see the beauty of the life she has, and is surprisingly strong-willed. but she's very protective of her position, for she knows that one slip and she could lose all the happiness she's built up till then. because of this, she has never told anyone outside family about her disease. not that there was much people to tell. but in desperation to live and gain Kouji's trust, she spills her secret to him. her gutsy personality is heart-warming, and it's no surprise that Kouji fell in love in just one night.
the art is simple, but very eye catching. it is similar to other arts, but has it's own subtle differences that match the story line perfectly. their facial expressions are so full of life and beautifully drawn. you can really see the love and sorrow in each character's face. despite there being a few mistakes, the art is simply beautiful.
Taiyou no Uta: A Song to the Sun, is one of the most heart-clenching stories i've ever read. it teaches you that life is too short to wait around. it is bound to make you smile, cry, and think about the small beauties in life.

It was a wonderful manga. Soooo sad and romantic. There are manga out there that are really sad to the point that you want to cry but you never really get there. This manga was simple, beautiful and hopeful. In the end everybody had a learning experience and grew. I cry EveryTime i read this manga. OUTSTANDING 2 of 4 chapters read MoMo-Da-Gr8(All reviews)

Sixteen-year old Kaoru, who cannot be exposed to sunlight, can only experience life at night, when she's in front of the train station, singing. There begins a love that has blossomed for the first time in her life.
Story: 10/10
I'm not really one for tragedy stories, but I watched the live action movie years ago, way before I knew about the manga. The movie became one of my favorites and I just rewatched it last night.
The story, for me, is quite original. I mean, a girl with Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP), an illness which also might be described as the allergy to the sun? I don't think I've even HEARD of other stories like that. The story is VERY fast paced, however. It never really says how many days pass or how long Kaoru and Kouji actually know each other. Even with the fast paced story line, it moves smoothly and breaks your heart as the ending nears.
And in the live action movie, you don't 'hear' any of Kaoru's thoughts, but in the manga, you can see them. I liked that a lot. It brought out the emotions she was feeling a lot more.
Life seems so much worthwhile as Kaoru's story is told and how she cant experience life like we can. This story will pull your hearts and before you know it, you'll be asking for the tissue box.
Art: 10/10
I liked the art. A lot. The expressions made my heart jump, especially Kouji's. In the live action, it was very hard for me to tell what Kouji was feeling, but with the expressions he makes in the manga, it was easy, making it even more sad. Minatsuki's art is simple yet elegant, and the character designs were cute.
Character: 10/10
I loved Kaoru's character. she was beyond adorable. Despite being ill, and only able to come out at night, she was highly energetic and did things on a whim, like confessing randomly to Kouji. As the story progresses, however, she changes quite a bit. Which, I love character development, and the story being so short, you get a whole lot at once. Kaoru is a very love-able girl and her story is as depressing as depressing gets.
Kouji is quite like-able too. He's seen at the idiot and dunce of his class, he cant even surf great, but his spirits are never knocked down. He changes quite a lot as the story moves, and I think its more noticeable than Kaoru's. But like I said before, with such a short series, all the character development is sort of thrown at you at once.
Overall/Enjoyment: 10/10
As I said earlier, I watched the live action movie years ago, never even knowing about the manga. I loved the movie a whole lot, its one of the best tragedies Ive seen, and I could watch it over and over. After reading the manga, I realized how WELL the movie followed it, and was really surprised. Usually movies change things around, or adds their own little plot lines in, but not this one. It is like a perfect rendition of the manga. Which is amazing. I enjoyed reading the manga, even if it was only a few chapters long, it still moved me the exact same way the movie did.
I recommend this to everyone who likes a quick read. It may cause a bit of tear shed, but that's only because its what its meant to do. After you read the manga, go watch the movie. Yui brings Kaoru to life perfectly in every way.
