While we’ve had a few previews of Sentinel’s upcoming Metal Gear Sahelanthropus toy from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, they’ve now finally unveiled the figure and revealed its release date and price point.

To give a bit of background here, the Sahelanthropus will be part of Sentinel’s ongoing Riobot line of toys. These are focused around mecha and include designs from a variety of manga, anime as well as games.

Often similar in scale to Bandai’s Robot Damashii figures, the Riobot toys are normally more complex in regards to their engineering and tend to include a lot of diecast.

A good case in point was their Riobot Blodia from the excellent Capcom beat-em-up Cyberbots. Most of the body and joints featured diecast metal. Not to mention that the figure was rife with all manner of gimmicks, including individually articulated fingers among other things.

This bump in quality often increases the price but from my own collecting I can happily say that Sentinel thoroughly deliver when it comes to their mecha toys.

In the case of the Sahelanthropus due to the design’s complexity, as it transforms, this means that the increase in diecast content and proper engineering can only be a good thing.

The other important point here is that T-REX are also handling the toy’s design. This is a big deal as they have a very solid reputation for delivering excellent toys, especially when any kind of transformation is involved. In addition, they are used by most of the major Japanese toy companies too but it seems that Sentinel is one of the few to openly credit them.

Considering all of this, it’s not surprising that the Riobot Metal Gear Sahelanthropus will cost 41,040 yen.

It’s a big and complex toy though, so this price tag isn’t a huge surprise, especially as it also features LEDs and a slew of other accessories.

Metal Gear Online Rex Head

Compared to the prior ThreeA Metal Gear Rex, that broadly cost the same, that was arguably bigger but lacked diecast and had quite brittle articulation. Not to mention that it didn't transform.

Personally, I’d much rather Sentinel and T-REX did a Metal Gear Rex toy. The ThreeA version was unwieldy and didn’t get the color scheme right either. Though in the case of the latter, I think they went more off the concept art than in-game assets.

In any case, this Riobot Metal Gear Sahelanthropus will be released next April and I can only expect that it will be thoroughly epic.
